The African American and African Studies (AAAS) Program at Michigan State University (MSU) began formally in August 2002 with two students and has grown in numbers with a total of twenty-two students currently. Over twenty-five faculty members across the university are affiliated with the program from varying disciplines, including Counseling Psychology, English, History, Urban Planning, Music, and Linguistics. Interdisciplinarity, which stems from the program vision, curricula, and faculty affiliations, has held an especially important role for our program from its inception due to our premise that an interdisciplinary program provides a solid framework for participating in the complex modes of discourse and inquiry that characterize much of the research on Black people in America. Three faculty members have served as directors of AAAS: Dr. Curtis Stokes (2002-2005), Dr. Gloria Stephens Smith (2005-2007), and Dr. James McClendon, newly appointed to the position in August 2007.
